Haughton was established in 1976 by former employees of a major UK Inspection and Insurance Organisation with the aim of providing a quality engineering inspection service at a competitive price.
During the early years, efficient management and attention to detail helped them succeed in this goal enabling profitable expansion and the establishment of a reliable Inspection Service with which the “Haughton” name has come to be associated.
In 1990 products were enhanced by including the full range of Engineering Insurance covers resulting in further growth. The Company subsequently changed it's name to “Haughton Engineering Insurance Services Limited” more accurately reflecting the growing range of services.
Growth continued, expanding the administrative Head Office, moving from Ashton-under-Lyne to new premises in Oldham and establishing a Branch Network throughout the UK and Ireland. They now have offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Ipswich, Dublin, Bristol, Edinburgh and Leeds.
In response to the introduction of new Legislation, such as the Pressure Systems Regulations , COSHH, Electricity at Work and indeed more recently, LOLER and PUWER98, they have co-operated with customers, helping safeguard the public, businesses and employees against injury and / or accidents.
In October 1997, Haughton was acquired by HSB Engineering Insurance Limited, part of the Hartford Steam Boiler Group and became part of the largest Engineering Insurance Group in the world. Renamed HSB Haughton Engineering Insurance Services Limited, the union allowed continuation of the first class Inspection service, enhancing Consultancy services and increasing it's insurance capabilities.
During 1998, three further acquisitions were made, EMSS (UK) Limited, including EMSS (Ireland) Limited, SGS-Instat (the in-service inspection division of SGS Group) and finally Inspection Quality Limited, formerly part of ICI. This move brought increased surveyor coverage together with an enhancement in areas of Specialist Consultancy Services such as Pre and Post-Commissioning, Design Appraisals, Expediting, Risk Assessment and latterly Calibration.
Most recently HSB Haughton Engineering Insurance Services Ltd has been re-assigned as the inspection services provider. Insurance is underwritten by HSB Engineering Insurance Ltd. This important change clarifies the relationship between the two entities. HSB Engineering Insurance Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA Reference Number - 202738).
HSB Haughton Engineering Insurance Services Limited are Accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) for in-service inspection and design appraisal and are full members of SAFed (The Safety Assessment Federation).
