Inspection Aspects

The following is a list of classes of plant noting the relevant requirements in the UK (for N. I., similar statutory equipment legislation is applicable but the year of implementation of the Regulation is normally different).

The Company provides its services in the role of Competent Person for all the following service areas for which it is Accredited by UKAS to BS 17020 - In-Service Inspection Bodies.

Inspection Services in Eire are provided to comply with that country's equivalent legislation.

PRESSURE SYSTEMS

 
Steam Boilers, associated Vessels and Systems

Air Receivers and systems (over 0.5 bar and 250 bar litres)

Systems with all other gases under Pressure (over 0.5 bar), high pressure hot water systems (over 110°C).

Refrigeration systems/air conditioning Plant with compressors over 25kW (combined input power).
The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR)
Require a Written Scheme of Examination. This determines the frequency and nature of thorough examinations
Construction of New Pressure Vessels Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999 (PER).

HSBIQ, a Division of the Company, operates under these Regulations as a Notified Body, appointed by DTI and Accredited by UKAS, providing statutory design verification and inspection services for Vessels under Construction.
LIFTING EQUIPMENT

 
All Lifting Equipment at any place of work / not where the predominant use is by the Public. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment regulations 1998 (LOLER)

Thorough examination at prescribed intervals; (6 months or 12 months dependent upon item or usage); as prescribed in a Written Scheme of Examination; or immediately following an incident.
Lifting Equipment in Public Areas or Places of Residence Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Applies to the parts of the equipment not accessible to the Public but accessed by Competent Persons during their course of work. Such parts require periodic inspection.

The remainder of the equipment should receive thorough examination as though LOLER applied in order to meet the requirements of Public Liability Insurance.
Escalators in Places of Work

The Workplace (Health and Welfare) Safety Regulations 1992.

Thorough examination in accordance with the H&SE guidance PM45. This comprises both an internal and external working examination each year.
Escalators in Public Areas

Subject to the requirements of Public Liability Insurance (likely the same requirements as those in Places of Work) or subject to requirements of a particular Local Authority.
POWER PRESSES

 
Mechanical Presses including Mechanical Press Brakes Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Thorough Examination at prescribed intervals dependant upon the type of guarding employed i.e. fixed - 12 monthly, moving - 6 monthly.

Examination of enclosed parts and tests of the electrical system to HSG236 (Health & Safety Executive Publication).
Hydraulic/Pneumatic Presses Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Inspection by an appointed person.
LOCAL EXHAUST
VENTILATION PLANT


 
At Places of Work Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (current edition)(COSHH).

Initial Appraisal of LEV plant prior to use, including where necessary, personal sampling.

Thorough Examination and Test at prescribed intervals dependent upon the process or medium.

Monthly - Blasting of Raw Castings.

6 monthly - Grinding of Metals for in excess of 12 hours per week.

14 monthly - For all other processes or materials causing dust or fume at a work point.
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS

 
At Places of Work The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAW).

Periodic Inspection and Test. The most appropriate standard is BS 7671 (IEE Regulations - current edition).
Places of Public Entertainment Local Authority Requirements. Normally annual inspection and test to BS 7671 (IEE Regulations - current edition).
Quarries The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 together with the H&SE Guidance "Electrical Safety in Quarries". The Quarries Regulations 1999.

Periodic Inspection and Test at either 6 months or 12 months in accordance with the Manager's Maintenance Scheme.
Petroleum Retail Outlet Local Authority Requirements. Normally Inspection and Test to the IP Code (Institute of Petroleum) at annual intervals, by a Competent Electrical Engineer.
Electrical Installation in Hazardous Areas Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).

Periodic Inspection and test of the Electrical installation in such classified areas.
ASBESTOS SURVEYS

 
Commercial Premises The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 (CAW).

Requirement to undertake a Survey in accordance with one of three options:-

a) Type 1 Survey - Presumptive Survey
b) Type 2 Survey - Sampling Survey
c) Type 3 Survey - Pre-demolition Survey

The Company provides services in respect of Type 2 Surveys.
NOISE SURVEYS

 
At Places of Work The Noise Regulations 2005.(NAW).

In work areas subject to excessive noise, a Survey is required to determine the noise level for comparison with the limits / action levels stipulated in the Regulations.
HEALTH & SAFETY

 
At Places of Work Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and Subordinate Legislation.

Surveys / Audits of the Workplace including General Risk Assessments.
 
Examinations, Inspections and Consultancy Services are carried out by
