Water Turbine/Generator
Water turbines are used in Hydro-Electric generating stations. The water flows from a high level reservoir through a duct or pipeline into a turbine, this causes the turbine blades to rotate and through a connecting shaft, drives the generator to produce electricity. Dependent upon the design of the generator this can be either DC (Direct Current) or AC (Alternating Current). Here we can see a water turbine with DC generator and automatic speed governor. This governor restricts the flow of water to maintain a constant turbine speed under varying electrical load conditions.
Note :- Periodic examinations of the pipeline, surge vessels, pressure relief valves and governers are essential to ensure that ingress of silt or other objects do not affect the protective devices. Governer tests should be made to ensure correct shut down on "overspeed".
