These machines can be wheeled or mounted on crawler tracks and the superstructure can slew through 360 degrees. All are diesel driven and are mainly used on construction sites and quarries. Capacities typically range from ¾ cu yd to 5 cu yd. These machines can also be fitted with a lifting hook to the rear of the excavation bucket in order to perform :-
- Lifting duties connected with the excavation, i.e. lifting pipes etc into the trench/hole being excavated, and
- As a crane around the site.

The fitting of additional security devices would reduce the insurance premium and the excess under an 'All Risks' or 'Hired in Plant' policy underwritten by HSB Engineering Insurance Ltd.
