An automatic guard has members that move outwards as the press ram descends, moving the operator bodily away from the trapping area. The sides of the press are protected by fixed guarding. Presses using this type of guard have to meet special criteria. Such guards are normally only found on presses with a capacity range of 150 to 4000 tons, and are usually of the straight through type with automatic guards fitted at the front and rear.
